Anthropic announced a $150 million nonprofit fellowship and a $200 million economic research fund on the same day it shipped two Claude Code versions: capability and liability in one news cycle.

Claude Corps

Claude Corps is a national fellowship placing 1,000 early-career workers inside nonprofits for a year at $85,000 each, trained on Claude. First cohort of 100 starts October 19. Applications close July 17. No degree required: over 18, under two years of full-time work experience, authorized to work in the US. Run by Anthropic alongside CodePath and Social Finance, with over 400 nonprofits hosting in year one.

The announcement came one day after a $200 million Economic Futures Research Fund and a Dario Amodei policy essay proposing tiered government responses to AI-driven unemployment, from 5% through levels requiring universal basic income and equity-sharing frameworks. The $350 million combined spend is the first time Anthropic has attached a dollar figure to economic mitigation alongside its model agenda. The implicit concession is clear: the disruption is real, the number is big enough to say so out loud.

Claude Code v2.1.173
Fable 5 model names with a [1m] suffix are now automatically normalized: Fable 5 includes 1M context by default and the suffix was causing match failures. Fixed a spurious "sandbox dependencies missing" startup warning on Windows when sandbox was enabled in settings. Thinking summaries in collapsed groups now render as markdown, stay visible at least 3 seconds, and cap at 10 lines. The fullscreen "Thinking for Ns" indicator counts up live while the model is active.
How to useclaude update or reinstall via npm. Model name normalization is automatic.

Sub-agents can now spawn their own sub-agents, up to 5 levels deep. Amazon Bedrock now reads the AWS region from ~/.aws config files when AWS_REGION is not set, matching AWS SDK precedence; /status shows the source. Added a search bar to the /plugin marketplace browser. Fixed sessions using 1M context without usage credits getting permanently stuck: they now auto-compact under the standard limit. WSL: fixed image paste (alt+v), screenshot paste on Windows 11 restored, Windows Explorer image drag added. Reduced idle CPU usage and improved performance in long and resumed conversations.
How to useclaude update. Sub-agent nesting and Bedrock region fallback are both automatic.
