Three days after Fable 5 and Mythos 5 launched, the US government grounded them.

Lead

Thursday, 5:21 PM ET. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick's letter reached Dario Amodei with an immediate order: suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for any foreign national, inside or outside the United States, including Anthropic's own employees. Anthropic took both models offline for every customer worldwide.

The trigger, per Axios: a claim from another company that it had jailbroken Mythos, alarming the administration about national security risks. The Commerce Department's position was that a technique existed to bypass Fable 5's safety classifiers, which gate access to Mythos's cybersecurity capabilities. Anthropic disputes the characterization and says it is working to restore access as soon as possible.

Fable 5 and Mythos 5 launched June 9. That is 72 hours from general availability to global suspension, with no advance notice to Anthropic, and a restriction scope broad enough to cover the company's own employees worldwide.

US Export Control Directive: Fable 5 and Mythos 5 Suspended
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick directed Anthropic to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for any foreign national, inside or outside the United States, including Anthropic employees. Anthropic disabled both models for all customers worldwide to ensure compliance. Reason cited: a claimed jailbreak of Mythos by another company, raising national security concerns. Anthropic disputes the characterization and is working to restore access. All other Claude models remain unaffected.
Why it matters The directive arrived 72 hours after launch, with no advance notice to Anthropic. The restriction scope (all foreign nationals, anywhere, including Anthropic's own employees) is the broadest application of US export control to a commercial AI product to date. Reported by Axios, CNBC, Bloomberg, Fortune, and Al Jazeera.
