The US government yanked both Fable 5 and Mythos 5 offline Friday. Both models are still dark as of Sunday. Anthropic technical staff are in Washington.
Friday at 5:21 PM ET, the US Commerce Department sent a letter to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei ordering the company to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all foreign nationals, including Anthropic's own employees. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick signed the order after another company claimed it had jailbroken Mythos, alarming the administration on national security grounds. Anthropic disabled both models for all global users to comply, called the finding a misunderstanding, and promised an update within 24 hours.
As of Sunday, June 14, both models remain down. Axios reports that senior Anthropic technical staff are in Washington to meet with White House officials this week. A Semafor report, also June 14, adds that the order stemmed in part from suspicions that a China-linked group had accessed the model. Former AI czar David Sacks accused Anthropic in a social media post on June 13 of being reckless with the Fable 5 rollout. Anthropic has not commented further since its original statement.
