The Musk-Altman cold war just got hot in the developer tooling market.

OpenAI announced Friday it will cut off model access to Cursor after SpaceX's $60 billion acquisition of the AI coding platform. November 12 is the shutoff date. The stated reason, per OpenAI: "We cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology within our terms of service, based on our experience with Elon Musk's companies violating contracts."

That is not a legal hedge. That is a shot.

The developers who built their workflows on Cursor's bundled GPT-4o and o3 integrations have eleven weeks to find a new path. While one lab burned its most prominent developer partnership, Anthropic shipped forty-nine CLI changes to Claude Code, dropped a built-in browser into Cowork, and collected data showing its flagship model is losing the pricing war inside its own portfolio. The day reads like a split screen: subtraction on one side, accumulation on the other.

By the numbers $60B: SpaceX acquisition price for Cursor

500k+ paying Cursor users as of acquisition

Nov 12: model access shutoff date

Max notice period allowed under contract
OpenAI / SpaceX / Cursor

The mechanism is simple. SpaceX completed its $60 billion acquisition of Cursor on August 14. OpenAI's terms of service prohibit operators from using its models for the benefit of entities it judges to be in violation of those terms. Musk's companies, per OpenAI's stated position, have a track record. On August 28, OpenAI informed Cursor it will wind down their contract. Proposed shutoff: November 12, 2026, the maximum notice period allowed under the contract.

The blast radius is real but not total. Any developer running GPT-4o or o3 through Cursor's built-in bundled routing faces a forced migration. That is not all Cursor users. Cursor has supported bring-your-own API keys for years, and OpenAI confirmed its IDE extensions stay available. But the subset on bundled-OpenAI routing, some share of Cursor's 500,000-plus paying users, now has a hard deadline. Their workflow is fine today and broken on November 13.

The pattern: this is the first time the Musk-Altman conflict produced a concrete technical cutoff that developers experience inside their daily tools. Previous rounds ran through courts, press releases, and X posts. This round runs through the IDE. It also exposes a risk that API-brokered developer tooling has always carried and rarely disclosed: a partnership breakup between your tool vendor and its model provider can invalidate your workflow overnight. Open-weight models, local inference, and tools that ship their own model access do not have this problem. Everything downstream of an API reseller does.

The read: OpenAI made the call that was consistent with its stated values and immediately expensive commercially. Every developer who migrates off Cursor's bundled access learns something about counterparty risk in AI tooling. Claude Code, which ships its own agent loop rather than brokering access to another provider's models, just collected a free argument it did not have to write.

The builder's move: if you run Cursor on bundled model access, open your API key settings today, not in October. OpenAI's direct API docs are at platform.openai.com. If you are evaluating IDE alternatives, this week is the right moment to test Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or Windsurf. Their model access is not routed through a third party with a Musk-Altman complication attached.

Claude Code 2.1.248: Restricted Mode Arrives

The --restricted flag (or CLAUDE_CODE_RESTRICTED=1 env var) removes code and command execution tools, removes WebFetch unless explicitly named in --tools, keeps file tools sandboxed inside the working directory, refuses bypassPermissions, and ignores local settings files. Forty-nine CLI changes total in the release.

Restricted mode is not a permissions prompt. It is a tool-surface reduction. The model still reads and writes files, but cannot execute commands, run code, or reach the web. For CI pipelines and shared runners, that is the containment primitive security teams have been asking for since Claude Code left beta. The secondary item in the release: experimental.cacheTtl in agent frontmatter, set to "5m" or "1h", overrides the prompt-cache TTL per agent. On long-running agentic workflows, per-agent cache TTL is the difference between burning tokens on every context reload and keeping the cache alive across a multi-hour run.

The pattern: restricted mode is the third major enterprise-readiness feature in Claude Code this month. Cross-session messaging (v2.1.224, Aug 7), self-hosted runners in public beta, and now restricted mode. Anthropic is building Claude Code into something a security team can approve.

Builder's move: Add --restricted or set CLAUDE_CODE_RESTRICTED=1 in any non-developer environment. Review the updated --tools allowlist before deploying.

Anthropic / Claude Cowork / Rolling from Aug 26
Claude Cowork Gets a Built-in Browser

A Chromium-based browser opens in Cowork's side panel when Claude detects a task requiring the web. It is separate from your personal browser. Claude cannot see your tabs, bookmarks, or saved passwords unless you manually import credentials site by site. Live on Enterprise plans as of August 26, rolling out this week to Pro, Max, and Team on macOS, Windows, and Linux.

The prior Chrome extension was a workaround. This is a first-party integration. The model navigates, reads, clicks, and fills forms in its own sandboxed session, with no extension to install or maintain. Enterprise admins who blocked the extension face a different security conversation now: a native browser in a managed desktop app is not the same risk surface as a browser extension with broad permissions.

The contrast with OpenAI's browsing story matters here. OpenAI's web access runs primarily through API tool calls and ChatGPT's built-in search, not a dedicated client-side browser the model controls directly. Anthropic is shipping the full stack. The sequence is coherent: Cowork as the workspace, the browser as the navigation layer, Claude Code as the terminal layer, cross-session messaging as the coordination layer. At some point these pieces fuse into something that looks less like a chatbot and more like a managed agent runtime.

Builder's move: Enterprise users can test the browser in Cowork today. Pro, Max, and Team users should see the update within the week.

Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash: Studio Video Goes GA

Scene extension up to 40 seconds in 10-second increments, first/last frame keyframe control, a 360p draft mode that generates previews 60 percent faster at one-third the cost of standard output, and 4K upscaling. Available in Google AI Studio, the Gemini API, Flow, and Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform.

The mechanism: the model analyzes up to 10 seconds of prior context to extend footage seamlessly, removes the ceiling that made early Gemini video feel clipped, and the 360p-then-upscale workflow is a real cost-optimization pattern for iterative production pipelines. Prototype at 360p, upscale the keepers. The economics of video generation just changed for anyone building on the API.

The contrast: OpenAI's Sora is the competing video model. Sora has not shipped an API control surface matching this level of developer configurability. Google just pushed video generation API capabilities meaningfully past what any other platform delivers to developers today.

Builder's move: Test Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash in Google AI Studio before committing to another video pipeline. The 360p draft mode alone justifies a half-hour evaluation.

Anthropic / Enterprise / Ramp Data via FT
Fable 5 Plateaus at 11%. Opus 5 Overtakes It.

Per Ramp data on 70,000 U.S. businesses: Fable 5 holds 11.4 percent of Anthropic dollar spend and just 6 percent of tokens two months after launch. Opus 5, launched in late July at roughly half the price, has already surpassed Fable 5 in enterprise spending. Anthropic's annualized revenue run rate hit $65 billion in July, up from $47 billion in May. The overall picture is growth. The distribution is telling.

Fable 5 runs around $10 per million tokens, double GPT-5.6 Sol at its current promotional rate. Anthropic's 30-day data retention requirement was explicitly flagged by Ramp economist Ara Kharazian as a compounding drag. Enterprise procurement teams can approve a capable model at half the price. They have a harder time explaining a data retention clause to legal.

The read: the enterprise model pricing war is not a race to the top. It is a race to the acceptable floor. Opus 5 crosses that floor. Fable 5, at current pricing and terms, does not, at least not for workloads where price and data handling are the decision variables. Anthropic leads OpenAI on adoption count (43.5 percent of tracked businesses vs. 39.7 percent), but the mix inside its own portfolio is not what the launch roadmap implied.

Builder's move: If you default to Fable 5 on the assumption it is best for every task, run your evals. On code and knowledge work, Opus 5 may deliver comparable results at half the cost. The retention policy is a variable, not a given.

xAI Grok 4.6 landed in public preview on Google's Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform via Model Garden. (x.ai/news.) 500k context window, configurable reasoning from low to xhigh. xAI placing its flagship on a Google-managed cloud endpoint is the most unexpected platform deal of the month. Ecosystem loyalty is apparently negotiable when distribution is the goal.

OpenAI DALL-E GPT retires from ChatGPT on August 30. The original image-generation plugin gives way to native image capabilities built directly into the ChatGPT interface. No migration workflow needed; native image generation works without the plugin layer.

Gemini 3.6 Flash is now stable and GA with improved token efficiency and better code and agentic planning than 3.5 Flash. SLA coverage now applies. If you were waiting on 3.6 Flash to exit preview before building on it, the wait is over.

Meta's Hatch consumer AI agent platform is expected in October, followed by a new model codenamed Watermelon. Meta's Muse Glimmer 30B, Apache 2.0 licensed and running on a single consumer GPU, is already circulating in the developer community for on-device agentic workloads. Hatch would give that model a first-party app surface.

The Close
One lab burned its most prominent developer partnership over a feud that started in a boardroom.
Another shipped forty-nine CLI changes and gave the IDE a browser.

CODE
Claude Code v2.1.248
Restricted mode (--restricted / CLAUDE_CODE_RESTRICTED=1): removes command/code execution tools and WebFetch (unless in --tools), sandboxes file tools to working directory, refuses bypassPermissions, ignores local settings. Also adds experimental.cacheTtl agent frontmatter ("5m" or "1h") for per-agent prompt cache TTL. SendMessage/ListAgents cross-session messaging now works on Bedrock, Vertex, and Foundry with telemetry off.
How to useAdd --restricted flag or set env var CLAUDE_CODE_RESTRICTED=1. Review your --tools allowlist; restricted mode resets the surface. For cacheTtl: add experimental.cacheTtl: "1h" to agent frontmatter.
